Best Layer Fan Ideas?

I'm getting ready to mount a layer fan to my effector similar to what xnaron did here:

http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=1704

Those squirrel cage fans are strong, but they are not feather light, so I'm wondering if they can affect print accuracy at higher print speeds and also can the added weight of the fans (especially being mounted off to one side) cause the towers to get out of alignment or cause other issues over time.

Also, I'm going to mount it to the stock rostock effector and the fan mount shown here is not quite long enough to reach the hole in the effector:

https://github.com/os1r1s-/misc-parts/b ... ductv2.stl

Does anyone know of a fan mount to mount this squirrel cage fan to the RMAX effector.

Lastly, I'm open to suggestion if anyone might have better layer fan ideas.

dont know what fan you have, but when I make the orions they all get http://seemecnc.com/collections/parts-a ... blower-fan which is a light and powerful fan...

I also designed the shroud for it, I have a version for both platforms depending on which you have..
Original platform:
http://repables.com/r/171/
Current platform:
http://repables.com/r/212/

hope this helps, this is what we use here at the shop

guanu, thanks for the idea and stl to go along with it. Do you have an image of the final assembly on the Rostock Max?

well its a pic I had from my orion, but its the same platform...

and if you want to know what kind of air it pushes.. I know its not in CFM, but I put my anemometer next to the nozzle with that shroud and got 4.6mph of airflow from it...

The fan used in the shroud is a fan that draws air from the front and dispels it through the side. The fan you have draws air in through the front and dispels it through the back.
In other words the fan you need is a miniature squirrel cage fan, not a through fan. Look at the image of the mounted fan again. The side of the fan facing you is completely blocked off.
The air comes into the front and is sent down the printed shroud. I hope this makes sense.

I am using this platform for the hotend and the shroud does not fit onto it:

http://seemecnc.com/collections/parts-a ... ostock-max

Which platform is your shroud designed for?

I am using the same platform on my Orion, it is the two part platform that screws together and I am
using the http://repables.com/r/171/ shroud for it. It uses the BFB0312HA fan.

Eaglezsoar, thank you for the info.

Here is a pic showing the shroud too narrow to fit over the platform. Still not sure where the problem lies. Is my Rostock Max out of spec? Is there a calibration cube I can print to make sure I am printing to correct dimensions? (Not sure why the pic got turned sideways)

Also I know am supposed to screw the shroud to the platform, but I don't have any screws small enough (even tried 2.5mm screw) to fit through the hole in the top of the platform. Did you just thread the screw into the hole?

If memory serves me correctly, I used a number 2 machine screw to mount it.

Thanks Eaglezsoar, I also noticed even if the slot in the shroud was wide enough that the screws in the platform will block it from going on all the way. Here is a pic showing the screws are not flush against the platform. Should the screws be screwed in all the way into the platform?

See this link: http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php ... &start=110

The red fan is mounted where two of the arms are the closest. There should be a hole there that goes all the way through the platform and that is the hole
you use to mount the shroud. Can you enclose a picture of your platform and maybe we can figure out what is going on to prevent you from mounting the
shroud properly. The picture you sent does not show me what I need to see. A picture from the top or the bottom showing the holes etc would be best.

I cannot slip the shroud onto the platform because the screws heads are sticking out a smidgeon so they are in the way. Your help in figuring this out is appreciated.

The red circle indicates where the fan is supposed to mount. There should be three such places.
If you have to, drill a small hole through at this point.

Thanks Eaglezsoar, I attached a pic showing the two screws that are in the way preventing me from slipping the shroud all the way on snug up against the platform and I circled the screws in red. Should these screws be screwed flush down against the platform to get them out of the way?

Those screws are part of the assembly for the Trick Laser Arms. The only way that I can think of is to take a cutoff blade on a high speed tool and CAREFULLY cut the offending portion of screw off. The screw would look
like the letter D when you are done. You would have to do both screws and I think it would be easier to take apart the platform to get better access to the screws. Wear eye protection when cutting. If you think you may
need another fan at some time in the future you could do all the offending screws at the 3 points where the fans would mount. This may not be the best method for mounting the fans but it is the only way I can think of.
The original arms had a small shaft that held the spinning u-joints and the fans fit fine but with the Trick Laser Arms the Screws interfere. There are some on the forum that go spastic whenever I mention cutting something,
perhaps they have a better idea and will post it for you.

Or you could just print the fan shroud and then trim off a little bit of the shroud to make it fit...

Eaglezsoar, thank you for clarifying the issue. It was a big help, now I know what's going on.
