missing ribbon cables, build on hold

Post by whaleboy »

And my build comes to a screeching halt... I can't find, nor do I remember seeing any ribbon cables in the LCD kit. I just got to the step in the assembly where they need to be hooked up. I went through the parts checklist last week, but since it only calls for an LCD and Attachment kit, both in the clear plastic box, it seemed like everything was there at the time. I was expecting to be doing my first print tomorrow.

Is this something I can pick up at Fry's? If so, can someone give me the specs of exactly what I'd need? To be clear, its the 2 LCD grey ribbon cables that connect to the main board.

Thanks

I doubt you'd find ready-made ones at Frys. I'd give fair odds you could find the parts, but you'd have to make them yourself. You may decide waiting for them to be shipped to you is easier.

The LCD panel assembly is a luxury feature and not actually required to print. Everything can be done from the computer host, so you could still be printing tomorrow even without hooking the panel up.

Good to know about the panel being optional. I'll try to get the firmware loaded then...

As for the cables, I'll run out and see if I can find the right parts. As long as I've get the right cable/connectors I can assemble the cables.

Thanks

There is a step in the calibration I've just hit that uses the LCD. Calibrating Z height, page 205 in the manual. It has you home and lower the head... I can do that from the PC interface, but it has you "set new Z = 0.00" on the LCD. Not sure where to do that in the rep host software.

Just got back from Fry's... even if they had the parts I would need, I wouldn't know. They were closed. Easter. Argh...

Do you have a dremel? :D If you don't feel like waiting for SMC you could always take an old IDE cable and just cut it to size.

You are a genius. Took a spare IDE cable, took it apart, and made two 10 pin cables. I now have the LCD working and am calibrating away...

Thanks
