1st print issue - PEEK fan Shroud.

Post by gibeaug »

After performing the various pre-print calibrations, I printed the PEEK fan shroud in ABS according to the manual. Everything went fine as far as the print function. Inserting the fan into the shroud is a very tight fit -so much so that if I force it in, the shroud binds the sides of the fan and the blades will not turn. I am thinking of getting a small file and smoothing the fan compartment - but I was wondering if there is anything I need to check as far as the settings used in the software?

Anyone else ever run into this?

TIA

That is a common problem and you can file the opening until the fit is good and the blades turn.
You do not need to check anything. Happy Printing!

Thanks for the info - I like it when the simplest solution turns out to be the best ;-)

I also found that calibrating my extruder steps/min significantly helped getting the PEEK shroud printed properly without any filing. The default steps/mm were putting out too much ABS and making the walls too thick.

That's a good thing to find early in the game, that problem could have gone undiagnosed for quite some time, great job in finding it!

Is that the link in the build manual you followed to calibrate the extruder feed?

I actually used this one:

http://richrap.blogspot.ca/2012/01/slic ... s-and.html

From the article, extrude 30mm of filament (do it slowly so as to make as accurate as possible), then:
If it's exactly 30mm, then you already have a perfectly calibrated extruder :)
If not then this is how to set the new number in firmware-
Our firmware in this test was set to 700 steps per mm and we extruded 30mm of plastic.

700 x 30 = 21000 (E motor steps for 30mm)

For example if you actually measured 32.6mm then "21000/32.6 = 644" (so you need to put 644 into your firmware replacing the 700 we had before, re-compile and download and you can re-check again and your filament should now move exactly 30mm as you have just calibrated it.

If you measured 27.2mm then "21000/27.2 = 772" (put 772 into your firmware)
Doing this a few times got the extrusion dead-on for me. Of course we just enter the value in the EEPROM, so you don't need to re-compile and re-upload each time.

I've printed that fan on a few printers. It is tight. ABS loves filing!

I have some special bits for my dremel tool that I use for ABS adjustment.
