Automated bed leveling

I am going to have to try this out, might save me some time when I dissemble and reassemble the bed.

That's total overkill if you know the bed surface is flat you only need to sample 3 points, and I'd probably use a separate mechanical probe, so you weren't limited to conductive beds.
Nop head did some work on this using a separate probe.

I think you'll have a couple of issues with using the hot end as the probe in real world use.
1. Hot ends aren't always clean and I know that certainly on mine I get leakage after the print that guarantees the metal isn't the first thing to contact the bed until I clean it off.
2. I used a similar setup on a Sherline mill to set 0 points, and very occasionally I'd get false positives. I think this is less likely on the printer.

If your not using Mach you also have to verify the firmware supports G31.
