TPU Filament

We are moving towards getting some TPU Filament made to test the feasibility of printing parts that will cross link with Polyurea and Polyurethane. A source test lab has agreed to make some trial material.

What tolerance limits should be applied to the 1.75mm filament. I am thinking that a 1.78-1.80 max to avoid jams in the feed conduit and 1.65 min. The most inportant consideration I think would be consistancy at what ever size is chosen.

Any opinions?

Having run my Filastruder for a while now. I can hold +/- .02mm. I would definitely shoot for under tolerance rather than over. If you go over too much the spool will be unusable:( Where as an under tolerance can be accounted for in software. Consistency is the key. Good luck with the trials! Let us know the out come.

If you need anyone to test it.....

Oh and definitely keep it less than 1.8mm. Trimmer line is 1.65-1.69, very consistent, and it has never once jammed any of my hotends. Undersize is better!

Received notice yesterday that the lab has drawn the sample and in their words "It looks really good". Sizewise I don't know what that means although I told them that the important controls were max diameter and consistancy. I think that they have drawn between 2 and 10 Kilos so we will see what it is like. Worst case we will grind it and use in our injection molders.

I will keep you posted.

My printer can do right up to 2.0mm. After that the filament gets stuck.

That polyurethane would print but it's expensive. The price is the same for a 3mm cord as for a 2mm cord, so using a bigger diameter would be more cost efficient.
