Installing dampers -- disassembly required?

Post by kiiwii »

I've already put most of the MAX v2 together and my astrosyn dampers are coming soon. How much disassembly is required to install these dampers? I imagine I'll have to take off the drive belts, remove the entire top section along with the aluminum extrusions, remove the hot bed(? to avoid flexing it while removing the top of the base), in order to access the stepper motors.

Can someone who has installed these dampers before comment on how much time and disassembly is needed?

I haven't installed them on a V2, vut on a V1 you can do it by just loosening the belts, popping them off the drive pulleys, removing the stepper and installing. It's a bit fiddly, and involves moderate swearing, but it took me maybe 20 minutes to do all 3.

If disassembling anything doesn't, then something is going horribly wrong.

I am nearly finished with my V2 that I had rushed into thinking I couldn't get the astrosyns dampers in time for.
I have used some foam rubber gaskets, but may be interested in retro fitting astrosyns if it is a sub hour project.
Lets see just how aggravating the noise is at the one month point - I'll tolerate anything for the first hour or two of novelty.
If it is an hour of re-work and the cost of the Astros vs having to print in the garage - easy choice.

I am having trouble imagining how to align the drive pulleys to the idler bearings with everything else assembled around it.
I did it by mounting the motor first and putting the drive pulley on last, but I don't think I will be able to sight along them now that they are installed.

Hmmm... cogitation required (-:

I managed to get them installed without disassembly, it took about two hours but only because I messed up the first time and forgot to offset the drive pulleys before re-mounting the steppers... It's quite a challenge to use the little access holes to remove/remount steppers (and particularly to add threadlocker), but it's doable. Glad I did it though!

Aligning the drive pulleys is not too hard: for the stock assembly everything is aligned simply by making the end of the stepper axle flush to the face of the pulley. The Astrosyn damper is 6mm wide. Using a 6mm screw (that astroboy includes in his kit), align the face of the pulley to 6mm past the end of the axle.

Hi,

I made cabinet with plexiglass & thin steel sheets combinations with powder coating finishing. It reduced the noise level from averege 68 DB to 59 DB for same make. Temperature
increased +5 degrees C related to room temp. There is 0.5 cm. all opening at bottom, 12,5 cm circular hole at the back&up of cabinet. I intend to apply dampers later too.

V1 was easy peasy, as mentioned. But, even if it means having to pull apart and rebuild half the machine?

Totally worth it!

I just installed the Astrosyn dampeners on my Rostock Max V2 and it does require a little bit of disassembly and time, but I think it is worth it. I managed to replace all three of mine in about an hour and it makes a big difference in noise from the machine. My method of installation probably isn't the most accurate, but it worked for me.

Here are the steps that I took as I can remember them:
1. Remove the bolts and nuts holding the belt in tension on the upper end of the x,y, and z axis. This allows you to pull the belt off the drive pulley of the stepper motor.
2. Unbolt the stepper motor. There are 3 screws that are easy to get to and one that was difficult for me on each motor in terms of access for a screw driver.
3. When installing the dampeners, make sure to install the dampener so that when you go and install the motor you can easily reach the screws.
4. Loosen the drive pulley and mark with a sharpie a line where the set screw is on the end of the drive pulley. I did this so that when I had to reach the allen wrench inside to tighten the drive pulley down I knew where the screw was.
5. Install the motors with the dampeners and make sure the drive pulley is loose on the shaft.
6. Reinstall the belt and the top bolts and nuts to tighten the belt.
7. Tighten the set screw on the drive pulley and move the carriage up and down manually to see if the belt is rubbing.
8. Loosen the set screw and adjust the drive pulley until the belt doesn't rub.
9. Tighten the set screw and then make sure to check the top belt tensioners.

These are just the steps that I took to give you an idea of how to do it. Someone can probably chime in and offer some tips or improvements on my method.

TyeGrady, your writeup on how to install the dampers could be a big help to others who plan on installing them.
Thanks for sharing.

This is probably the route I will go first. Have you thought about lining the walls with foam or egg crate material to kill more sound? This also reminded me to download a decibel meter app to my phone. Thanks.

Mounting egg case style noise reducers might cause more temperature increase. Opening big heat vent hole might cause noise increase too. So I do not recommend insulation. I used Iphone noise DB measurement too. Reminding, DB scale is logaritmic, 70 to 60 DB means 10 times noise reducing.
wish fun.
