My Rostock MAX is coming the mail tomorrow and I have concern about cats being curious about the build and eventually running machine. I have an area for the build and plan temporally build a cardboard fort on my desk to protect the build while at work. Then keep the cats and cat hair away from the printer, I would like build an enclosure around the printer, to act as a cat shield and thermal chamber. Just looking for some advice on both as I build the machine.

I've already thought about getting rid of the cats, but the GF will not have it. Other comments are most welcome.

Let the cat play with the hot end... while it's hot.

I like that idea, I've learned not to touch many things that way myself. I'm looking to keep cat hair out of the printer, more then the cat it self. Looking for some good ideas.

You just have to surround your machine with water somehow...

Depends on the cat. I once had an orange tabby that loved water. He used to jump in the shower while I was using it, at least until the day he slipped on the edge of the tub and tumbled in head-first. That memory still makes me giggle 20 years later.

Besides, if the moat wasn't at least 10 feet wide, the cat could just jump over it. Closing the door to the room is way easier.

I agree with Jim, just close the door.

The solution is simple.

Attach weight bearing hooks to the ceiling, and then simply hang the printer with 100lb rated line in the center of the room. Your calibration may vary.

It might have something to do with our national pastime of disliking cats... They're pretty bad for the native animals you know Not that I'd condone hurting a cat (I like cats individually), as a species they're jolly destructive.

My cats loved chasing rabbits. Fortunately, wild rabbits are usually alert enough and fast enough to get away.

Of course, in Western Australia the rabbits hunt the cats.

The litter box is in the same room. Not an option in another room due to layout and roommates.

I've been using it for a while and it works great for keeping the heat in and the kids / pets / nosy neighbors and others out!

Another benefit is it is CHEAP , just make sure you get a good quality liner for about $10, not one of the cheap $2.00 ones.

Mike, I saw that and I think I'm going to do version of that. I think I'm going to build stand offs like on this machine. http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=5695 I just want to much the curtain does not rub the cheapskates. Do you have video of yours running? How much does it rub?

I don't have a video right now, but can make one and post tonight if you want. The way I have it set up, the shower curtain is attached to the top and hangs down past the build plate but loose and not attached at the bottom.

It is tight enough to keep drafts and critters out.

It is silent when running there is no crinkling. The cheapskates may barely touch, but if so it is has never caused any issues for me. I am going to make a second one of these for my new Max tonight and can post a video and photos if you'd like.

I really considered an acrylic or lexan box type enclosure before doing this, but I really didn't want the hassle of the extra bulk around my workbench and definitely didn't want to have to lift anything up and over. I like this because even with the curtain fastened closed and the bed heating or hot, I can still reach underneath or through the front opening and calibrate or pull hanging filament from the nozzle without opening a door and letting cool air in.

Nice!, I have been trying to come up with a way to enclose my printer when its done, I read your first post about using the shower curtain and I guess I wasn't picturing it correctly in my head. This looks way easier and cheaper than anything I have come up with so far.

I have been looking around here and found a few good idea that got me thinking a bit. I am needing to completely enclose the build area and in the end the filament area also for printing in PC and Nylons. I have been doing some work in Solidworks and tonight I am printing out the beta pieces for fitting.. I have not finished putting the render together (it takes almost more time then designing the stuff in the first place) but below is a peek at the render and some pieces dry fitted for measurements.. I know not everyone wants a full enclosure of this style. But thought I would throw in my two cents worth.

For my needs I am also doing a complete environmental control system with an Arduino, dehumidifier and heating and venting system. But I am making sure that aspect is modular so if not needed it can work with it an keep overall cost down.

That looks good. What are you using for the sides. I'm thinking about doing the same thing to space a plastic wrap away from the frame a little.

going with Plexiglas sheets to seal it in. I should have another render tonight.
