So my multimeter died over the weekend. It was about 10 years old. So what is popular here? I have a budget of about $200 for it. I would like one that can log to a pc via USB. I have been looking over amazon and there are allot of options out there, but I don't want to get a lemon.

You'll never go wrong with a real Fluke meter.

If you want a budget brand, look at the Tenma lineup from MCM Electronics.

Check out eevblog.com, there is a whole list of multimeters there that have been reviewed, and a large list of multimeters that haven't passed their claimed safety ratings. There is a for sale section but usually not much in the way of multimeters.

Hi I have a 8 Tenma 72-7732's that have a 40.000 instead of a 20.000 count. the 9 v battery is a little bit of a hassle but otherwise we've had no problems with them. Only when we tried two of them running simultaneously over USB to a single pc they were not working, but otherwise OK. I also use the thermocouple to monitor the setup's temperature for hours and you can set the menu to keep the thing from auto shutting down all the time. Occasionally I need to avoid Viton o-rings from overheating in a vacuum setup.
We use it in labview and one of the students implemented that but it also has it's own program. the drivers are for C if I remember right. I'm not sure about windows 8 and 64 bits..
Nice feature is that it has a 2 way opto coupler communication for the USB so no danger of destroying your notebook or PC.

Form Tenma I have a destroyed st-3343 hall effect current meter. I have no idea how it happened, but I can't point at Tenma for that ether. In the future I will only have the magnetic loop to measure currents and the other functions should be avoided because that is maybe how it happened. that inst. has no usb functionality but while it was working it was a dream.

I bought all this stuff with Farnell (UK & Netherlands) but privately they are expensive.
