Nozzle plunged into piece during printing.

I had a two hour print in on my MAX v2, it the hot end decided it wanted to plunge itself into the piece. This the third time printing the file, the first two printed fine, but I slowed the speeds down to try and get a better print on the third one. Any idea why this happens. The hot end and hot bed were still on, lucky I was in the other room and heard it stop. Is this a safety concern when the hot end stays on and the crashes into the plastic? Is there any chance of a fire after the hot end sits in the plastic for hours. I found it after about 10 minutes luckily.

Going to try the print again to see if it happens again.

What slicr are you using?? are you running off an s/d card?
I have seen this many times, still trying to figure it out. But it seems like it is file or slicr related.

I was using Cura in Repetier and running off the computer. I'm going to try running off the SD card, havent done that yet. I did a print using Cura of the same file just before the crash, just changed the speeds to slow it down trying to get a better part. Repetier was acting weird also. I could work in Repetier, but I couldn't move the machine around or close it. I could do everything else thou. Since I was in the room, not sure. But it maybe looks like the software crashed. I had my email open like I have on other prints. Here we go again, giving it another try.

Start running your prints from the s/d card and lose those "ugly wires" LOL. That way you can rule out a connection problem. If the problem persists, try slicing in slic3r.
I had a print recently that craped out every time in the same spot that was sliced in vita but printed fine when sliced in slic3r.
There were some strange lead in and out marks on the print in the layers just before the hand up the stopped the print directly above the lead out mark..

Thanks DavidF, I'll start doing that. I've only done 5-6 prints so far. I'm planning on trying different slicing programs at some point. There are features that I like in both slic3r and cura. Time will tell.
