Damaged Onyx Bed on Rostock? (nope just bad wires)

Post by JeremyAgost »

I've been doing a lot of printing lately, with the awesome E3D hotend on my Rostock. I always print ABS, bed at 100ºC. Just recently I've been coming back to the printer and the temp system has been in "defect" mode, where both sensors read "def" and the heaters are disabled. I noticed in the Repetier log that the heated bed sensor was reporting fault. I checked the thermistor leads at the RAMBo board and sure enough the bed sensor was shorting. I took off the onyx bed and tested the leads on the underside of the board and found close to 100K resistance. That was weird. So I put it back together and as I was screwing the bed back in I noticed the sensors go to "def" again. So then I did some experimenting and discovered that when I apply pressure to one corner of the Onyx bed, the sensor shorts out. What the hell? Is the bed cracked or damaged in some way maybe? I don't see any damage to the traces and I couldn't find anything on the underside that would short it. Any ideas? Probably need a new bed :(

TL:DR
I think my Onyx is cracked or otherwise damaged because the bed sensor shorts out when there is pressure on the edge of the bed.

I cracked bed would most likely report as an open circuit not a short.

I think I found the culprit. Underneath the bed, sandwiched between the board itself and the wooden spacer piece I discovered the soldered-on sensor wires pressed into each other. The insulation looked like it had just started to become compromised on the wires, causing them to short only when pressure was applied. I snipped and resoldered the wires and now it seems alright. Whew.
