Print failed at same height??

This is a weird one. I'm trying a large print (about 14" high) with taulman bridge, rostock max v2, and e3d v6. This print failed at almost the exact same height both times...

I don't know much about why and when it fails, I just look over and see this:

Here is a view of the plug that had formed when I pushed the nylon out manually

My only idea is maybe the filament is taking on a lot of moisture and it gets too thick at that exact time (seems unlikely?).
Your guesses are as good as mine, and please tell me them =)

is the printer still running and it just quits extruding, or does the printer just stop? What slicer are you using?

Hey David, only noticeable thing is that the hot end stop extruding. It does seem like it might extrude more and more slowly leading up to when nothing comes out at all. I'm using Cura 14.07.

what temp and print speed? wondering if as the outside perimiter increases that you start losing extrusion from running either too fast or too cold?

speed - 35 mm/s
temp - 250
layer height - 0.4 mm
nozzle size - 0.8 mm
retraction - 1.5mm at 40 mm/s
diameter was 1.8 for this print I believe, with flow at 100%
thank you David! your questions are really helpful

Your welcome, only problem is that nothing stands out as for the problem...

David, do you use taulman bridge? Do you know the humidity when you print with it?

Ive just spend the past 3 days reading up on the bridge and ordered a roll yesterday. I dont think moisture would cause the nozzle to clogg, but I also have heard that it does make a difference on print quality if you do dry it before printing. Hopefully my roll gets here soon, my previous nylon print (trimmer line)
Didnt go so well due to very high moisture in it. But it extruded easily and did not clogg. Maybe try bumping the temp another 5'C??

Moisture absolutely can cause jamming issues, but at first glance, this doesn't look like it's caused by moisture.
IME, with .8 nozzle and layers above .35mm, my speed is capped at 25-30, and I print at 260.
My first guess is that at that point in the print, you're simply trying to push more filament through the end than is able to melt. The back pressure causes a little blob/bulb that jams up and that's that.
First thing I would try would be bumping the temp up and/or lowering the speed a bit.
All of this, of course, is assuming that the filament is thoroughly dry before printing.
I believe Bridge is Nylon 6/9 or 6/12 (or something similar). Both of which are much less hygroscopic than virgin 6 which is what the Trimmer Line is. That means that instead of 18-24h for full saturation, you probably have 7-10 days. So once it's dry, it shouldn't get wet again to cause issues over the course of a long print.

thank you!! I threw it in the oven and will try again tonight. I'll also drop the speed to 25mm/s and print at 260. I will post the results =)

Jeff, are you having any better luck now??
I just got my roll of bridge and am running my first print.
.4 mm nozzle .3 layers 255c on a 75c bed at 40 mm/sec dia 1.85mm seems to be printing well with no steam puffs. Finish not quite what im looking for just yet so I may try slowing down on the next print some...Or maybe go to a .6 nozzle??

Hey David, cope's advice to print hotter and slower worked well for me. (I'm using a .8mm nozzle) I was able to print 2/3 of my print before I ran out of a spool and try to hot swap, but didn't do it right (first time). I'm really happy with the surface finish and the strength is insane.
How long did you dry the nylon for and at what temp?

I had the filament in the toaster oven for a few hours set at 120'F, but who knows what the actual temp was, those things are inaccurate as all heck.
The bridge is actually more flexible than I would like to have seen, but yea its some tough @#$%!
I would really like to find a filament with its toughness, but with less flex....need suggestions

Polycarbonate is what you want I think. I have a roll but haven't tried it yet

PC needs to be dried like nylon. Also, it warps terribly. You will almost certainly need some sort of an enclosure in order to get good prints. It is really strong stuff, but by far the toughest material to print with that I've tried.
