72 hour print Saber toothed skull. Scaled to max build size.

We printed up the Saber Toothed Tiger skull when it first came out. The first time we printed it we did so at 1.25 times larger. In the end we scaled it to 2.25 times larger than the stock sized STL. Our first print was a bit rough due to slight play in the E3d V6 mount. It had loosened up from weeks of none stop printing so I reprinted and replaced it. Shortly it will be replaced with a CNC milled mount to stop the play it seems to get over time when printed. So anyhow. Both skulls were printed out at .2mm in PLA. They are different brands of PLA though. The Larger skull took over 52 hours, the stand was over 19 hours and the teeth were about 5 or so hours I think. I only added a brim three lines thick on top of purple glue stick bed. printed at 220C with a .4mm nozzle E3d V6 on a 60C bed. I saw some folks were having a hard time so i thought I would give it a try and see how it went. The larger skull printed without a single issue. A little strings here and there but i am using VERY little retract with PLA on the E3d V6 due to some past jam issues. A 52+ hour print is not one I wanted to risk a jam on. Hope you enjoy the pics!

Going really well and looking really good after about eight or so hours.

all done with a bottle for scale. Little stringy but I was playing it safe on retracts in PLA on the E3d V6 head. It cleaned up with ease.

The larger skull stresses the poorly designed stand. Whoever designed the stand did not run the rod though the stand, but only added it to the top of the stand. Any second it will break it seems on the larger skull. This is after only a few hours with the heavy skull (.2 layer, 10% infill)

Nice! You might hold the record for the longest print for a "civilian" (that doesn't work at SeeMe) :)

Thanks guys! It is one of the rare "fun" things we have printed. Have a new build project where I am looking to use acetal, ABS-PC alloy and Nylon 12-64. Should be fun. I expect some interesting times (small fails) ahead!

Oh Man, that is AWESOME! Great job. Where did you get the files to do that? Did you scan it? I have a SL scanner and want to do that with skulls I have laying around.

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:472463 was the file I used. Scaled it up by 2.25 times and enjoyed watching the printer go for over 2 days straight.

That is an impressive nasal aperture. Must have exponentially superior olfactory abilities compared to us.

The remix of the stand is currently on the printer. 19+ hours is the EPT. Pics when it finishes up.

So the stand just finished.. 22H46M. so the total for the whole thing came out to about 76 or so hours. not bad at all.

Wouldn't a piece of wood and a dowel rod work just as well?

It would overall but the guy who is buying the skull wanted it all done on the 3d printer for his office. I guess the second answer is a no because I like doing large/long prints. I bought my Max V2 to print big prints and to allow others to do the same on my printer. I am already looking for the next thing I can print to push my print time even more. I plan on buying a second Max V2 shortly for two reasons: 1. so I will also have a printer set to go and not care if it is doing a hugely long print as I should have the second free if needed and 2. because I can use one for R & D projects and not care if it is down for a bit while fixing something if it fails. I do understand that in some ways wood could have been far faster. But aside from printing it in wood filament, I would not have it any other way than printed. But I do see your point for speed and (maybe) ease of making it from wood.

You got me on longest print time. Mine is 56 hours right now. Nice!

How is that possible?! Surely the prints on the huge Delta have topped this mark right? I'm a bit blown away if what you say is true. How long was the life sized print I recall seeing you guys knock out on the huge delta from what looked like a 3d scan of a child? That had to have been a long print yes?

I did this skull at .2 layer height with a .4 nozzle. but there are a few spots in the tighter curves where it has a TINY gap between the perimeter lines. I am thinking of upping my perimeters from 2 to say 3 or 4 and dropping down to .1 layer height and increasing the infill from .10 to .15 or .20. I will very soon be back on the road every Friday- Monday so long prints are in some ways the best use of my Delta when I am away (someone is home to keep an eye on it though).

I am also hoping to remember to set up a time lapse camera and get a nice time lapse of the next print. If I get my ducks in a row I will be sure to post the video here.
