Rostockmax v2 First print shut down

Post by Slyforce1 »

i just finished my build on the Rostockmax v2 kit.
it powered up and all seemed to be going great, i uploaded the Repetier-Host and followed the manual.
my heat bed and extruder seem to be working great and holding set temps.
when i go to print my fan shroud it prints out the first layer or so then the power shuts off.
i have rechecked and restarted a few times now just to have same result.

any ideas on what i might have wrong ? or if it's over heating somehow.

A quick test would be to take the acrylic sides off the base, and let it breath.

I've taken the acrylic sides off and directed a temporary fan to blow thru but still having no luck.
as soon as it heats up, it beeps and gives hands clear message , extruder drops down then shuts it down before the first layer even gets around.

I got the same issue here, I think it's related to electronics not firmware as when I disconnected the wires of bed, then set bed temp. it's setting "just on screen" but not powering off.

This is normal behavior for power supply to shut down if short detected, but I don't know what short could happen in bed !!!

Please experts, think with us.

Got it working - but strange solution - just un-tighten the 6 screws of the heat bed.

That's not a solution. Something is causing a short. You need to pull it apart and find out what's going on. You won't get good prints with a loose heated bed.

This could be a cracked trace in the board shorting to the ground plane.

You could check it with a volt meter as it is, then torque it back down and see if a short is created.

Good Luck!

Do you have a large fan or other appliance connected to the same outlet/circuit as the Rostock is plugged into?

When I had a desk fan plugged into the surge protector that the Rostock was plugged into, shutting the fan OFF would cause the rostock to power down completely, every time. It was either the surge protector or the Rostock PSU protecting itself from the presumable spike of current (or something) from the fan being switched off.

Could be a rough solder joint on the underside of the heated bed piercing the insulation of wiring passing under it. Keeping the soldered areas low profile, smooth, and covered with a layer of kapton tape helps. Also pays to make the wiring that passes from heated bed into the Max's base extremely tidy. Wires twisted or crossing over each other can end up jammed against the bed as screws are tightened.

OK, found the final solution:

It's my fault that I didn't imagine the view under the heatedbed, as - in my case - two wires of heatedbed power were extended to be between mounting plate and heated bed so thanks GOD the heated bed not broken when tightening the screws, now I fixed the wires with kapton tape to be within the big circle hole of mounting plate, tested it and everything is OK.

Thanks all for fast reply and ideas for solving that. Hope Slyforce1 got his issue fixed.
