T-Rex Skull

Post by dunginhawk »

So... Id love some advice on cleaning up the imperfections in this print and others... It seems like when it comes to really fine detail, my prints come up short... The inside of the triangle, the teeth of the T-rex etc...

Now i think the rest of this t-rex lower jaw looks amazing. No marks, no blemishes.. it looks great... Just the teeth.

Here are a few shots... any advice on cleaning that part up?
thank you gents.

edit: the two teeth on the left side that look darker, its because I was stupid and two teeth broke off, so they are glued. those teeth are VERY fragile.

its been a day or so.... so i thought i would bump... so what would you guys suspect is the issue that the pointy teeth are rough, but the rest of the model is near perfection... thoughts?

Maybe you're printing too fast, too hot, or both?

Does the slicer you're using have a minimum layer time setting, and are you using it?

I'm pretty generous with my min layer time - but probably between 60 and 90 seconds would be reasonable if you're having trouble.

Also one thing to check would be if it has a minimum speed setting that will override your minimum layer time. Mine's set to 2mm/sec.

One thing you might consider is printing one or two of those makezine towers at the same time. (The tall thin ones). That would also give your hotend something to do while your teeth are cooling down.

This is a model that needs a lot of consideration to get the teeth to print nicely.

Minimum layer time is a big help. Amount of time will depend on how good your layer cooling fan setup performs. Multiple fans can help. With only one, a tooth may be in the airflow "shadow" of another tooth.

I usually start with a minimum layer time of 30 sec, but that can vary a lot case to case. Small details like this on an otherwise large print, I'd probably try 60 sec. And as Ben said, make sure it's actually using it and not being revoked by another setting.

i have 3 layer fans setup, so i think it has to be something else.. perhaps the min time... since im not going to test by doing 10 hour prints :) ill print some test spikes :)

funny thing is i ran 4 tests.

1. Craftware - the best
2. mattercontrol, tons of stringing
3. same
4 craftware, 5mm/s speed and it ended up killing the job on its own...

interesting

looks like your suffering from resolution in the x-y axis. What nozzle diameter are you running? more information is needed regaurding your set up for any one to diagnose....

so i ran about 3 more tests from Craftware, and they all produced similar results to #1... So its mattercontrol (or the settings in there) causing that insane stringing) . So im rolling with craftware right now to fine tune.

So ive altered 2 settings to see if i can modify the results.

Perimeter Gap
Wipe length.

Neither seem to affect the final look much... ALL 4 tests from craftware look very similar to the one on the left in the pics above.

Still seems like the plastic isn't getting the time to properly cool before the print head lays down a layer on top of it.

What if you print 3 of those spike tests at the same time? Does it look better?

it would surprise me if it doesnt have time to cool. running 3 layer fans at 100% and it has to touch nine spikes... i may try doing 3 , good idea.
