I am messing around with the rambo and wondered if the fan is located where it is for a reason. Would a fan blowing on the top of the board be OK? I wanted to use a larger diameter / quieter fan.

The biggest source of heat on the RAMBo is the driver chips for the stepper motors. The chips are designed to use the circuit board as a heat sink, so the most effective means of reducing chip temp is to cool the backside of the board. Cooling the front without cooling the back might even cause problems.

This is what I did for mine. It has worked great so far. After over 325 hours of printing, not a single heat issue related to the PSU, the Rambo, or anything down there. http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php ... 584#p51072

I'm not using the Rambo on a Rostock, although it was harvested from one. I am making a case to enclose the Rambo and LCD.
