Is there a trick to installing the retaining clips

Looking for some advice on installing the arm retaining clips without breaking them. During the install I ended up breaking 3 of clips in some form. I was able to super glue then back together, enough so that I could install them but plan on ordering replacements. Before I try installing the new ones wanted to get some advice on installing them so that I can avoid breaking them during the process.

When I built mine, I slipped the retaining clip over the axle, such that the axle was going through the holes on one side of the on the retaining clip and in its final position. Then all I had to do was push the other side over the axle to lock it in place. I found this technique worked best for me.

That is basically what I did, but getting the second side one required me to stretch the clip to the point that it broke on a few of them. If the rods slid easier you would be able to shorten the length you need to clear on the second side, but I know they are tight for a reason.

I might not be understanding what you're saying. I didn't pull the second side over the end of the axle, I just snapped the axle into it.
