hot end grabs print and moves it around

Hello,
So I finally got my Max V2 up and running last night. I was printing the fan shroud (ABS), all was good until it got to about .780" in height and then the print came loose from my heated bed and that was the ball game. I'm using the Elmer's Purple Glue Stick, and can print parts that are fairly short, but I don't get why it would break the print loose. Settings were Standard, 218°C hot end and 80°C build plate.
Any suggest appreciated..

Cris

More heat would be my first suggestion. I print ABS at 225-235C and have the bed at 90C or above.

A little extra nozzle heat on the first couple of layers can help establish a good bond. The fan shroud does not have a large footprint to keep it anchored, so it is important that the first layer stick well. You could even add a 3-5mm skirt in the slicer settings to help.

I'd suggest kicking the Onyx bed up to 90C (minimum) as well.

EarthBound,
Yes, I did apply more heat, but also found that switching to hair spray as opposed to Elmer's glue stick really did the job. The hair spray is difficult to remove with a razor blade, but that beats a failed print.

Thanks,
Cris

also make sure you have some z lift so your nozzle is not unnecessarily dragging along the surface

Bubbasnow,
What amount of "Z" lift do you recommend? Noob here as you all know

Thanks,
Cris

I do 1mm. Our printers are fast, it doesn't hurt to have a lot as far as I have seen.

I also switched to hairspray and everything sticks like a rock!!! Also tried a large Kapton tape square and liked that except during a large flat print it actually wrinkled/pulled the tape loose. Hairspray is kinda a pain to clean off after a print, but the "stickiosity" is pretty awesome;-)

Windex cleans the hairspray off really well.

JFettig,
So you're saying that after printing each layer to have the Z axis lift close to .0396" when doing next layer? Sorry for dumb question, but I thought the layers were much thinner (Standard setting, not Fine).

Thanks,
Cris

Depends on your retract setting but when you lift off a part you're no longer squishing the filament against something to make that thin layer. That extra filament coming out of a .5mm nozzle is enough to grab or knock into the layer below when the nozzle re-enters the print area.

My z-lift is 1.5mm

Kas,
Okay, yes I misunderstood...makes good sense now. Lots to learn.....
