I have been away for a little while due to a project for IBM at work. But, I have come back and with new goodies!!!! I received my e3d eruption pack with .6 .8. 1.0 and 1.2 nozzles. Also in the process of assembling my new Filastruder to allow me to make my own exotic filament(kynar, hdpe, polypro, ect). I slapped on the .8 nozzle today to print a motor bracket for my DIY filament winder(more on this later). My results are completely confusing me. I had to slow down to 75% speed and bump extrusion to 125% and it still seems to be under extruding. I have gaps in solid layers, but the most frustrating is that it seems to be very slowly retracting when it comes to the short edge of the bracket. The result is that both sides of the bracket are nearly missing. Suggestions?

ive been using the 1.2mm nozzle, you don't need much retraction, maybe a wipe. print speed depends on how fast you can heat up the material while it extrudes it. Start at a good base speed and increase temp until your extruder stops skipping. while i don't have much of a retraction, some times i feel like it could benefit from an extra prime of filament.

That's the weird part ....I can see the gear reverse but its super slow and not to my retraction settings. Its doing same thing on both sides of the part, almost like its trying to compensate? I will try boosting temp tomorrow... I'm at 270 now. What is the max the stock thermistor will handle? I think I remember it being around 300? What temp are you running at with the 1.2?

Thats waaaaaaaay over temp for ABS (assuming its ABS?). The point of the Volcano is the large heat zone/thermal mass means that the filament has more time to heat up, so similar speeds are larger extrusion widths are possible at the same temp. You shouldn't have to go much above 250C, really the sweet spot should be just about the same ABS temp you use on a V6 if it works like E3D intended.

Sorry thought i had mentioned that it's nylon trimmer line. Had amazing results with the .4 nozzle at 265, bed set to 100. Maybe its time to put the Filastruder to work and make some of my own nylon, we got plenty of pellets laying around.

Ok, so after tinkering around. My problem is strictly with the filament. It is completely water logged and steams quite a bit, causing bubbles and voids. Also with it being slightly undersized (1.64mm) and steam pressure not helping, it does not want to extrude fast enough no matter what temp or extrusion rate. In fact, after backing the nylon out to switch to abs, I noticed that the nylon had weird grind patterns on it probably from trying to push the material so hard( I maxed temp out at 285 with no noticeable results). I think if i had increased extrusion anymore I would have just ground away enough material for it not to feed anymore. Abs works great at 255C and 45mm/s.

LESSON LEARNED: Make Sure You Dry Your Nylon!!!!!!
