That's actually pretty clever.

I suspect assembling it for the first time would be pretty tricky. I wonder if he's thought about using a thin bungee cord to act as tensioners. No knots to tie and they could have hooks installed on the ends that would make rigging pretty simple.

That would make it much easier, and it could become a quick change system that way like the magnets.

That seems very, very stable from the video angles. Yeah I agree on the whole knot/string thing Gene. That would be a pain to get tight. I can barely tie my shoes!

I'm sure someone could design some sort of ratcheting, quick-release string tensioner STL that would provide a nice solution...

Even using a tension spring would work.

You don't want springs or stretchy things, you want a constant moderate tension that won't move if pulled on in my opinion, in other words a super high spring rate with low-ish force. Put 10 pound preload on it and 11 pounds and it moves 1/8" out of socket is bad. I'd rather have 10 pounds on it and it takes 100 pounds to move it 1/8" out of socket.

I gotcha, I guess you are putting a lot of faith on the 3 lines. Wonder why not use the typical magnet setup with the tension lines.

From a performance perspective I don't see any advantages over the Traxxis ball end joints. And they don't need to be accurately drilled and they hold everything in position without string or bungee. It's a cool idea and it is good to see people experiment but it really doesn't offer anything new and has it's share of quirks (IMHO!).

I gave up on magnetic ball ends because they would dislocate with my Kraken hot end slinging around. The Traxxis rod ends have been fantastic and don't have the issue and produce parts with indistinguishable quality.

I had my magnetic setup on a whopping 6 hours and knocked the effector off twice trying to calibrate everything. Aluminium bars and a heavy hot end with steal balls makes a horrific sound when it comes crashing down. I noticed this guy has a crack in his glass, probably from the same reason.

I do like his direct drive. Curious about the swinging weight and what effect that has.

Looks like his new setup is magnetic. You can see hard drive magnets under the aluminum base.
