Viotek PSU for RAMPS.

Post by jasco13 »

RAMPS needs a separate 11A and 5A supply. How do i achieve this with the Viotek PSU.

There is a plug with 3 yellow and 3 black wires. If I connect all those together will that be sufficient for the 11A supply?

Yeah, that will allow you to draw the max amount of current from the PSU without worrying about the wires heating up.
That connector is meant for video cards, there should be another connector with two black and two black wires. This is the one I use to connect to my (sanguinololu) board.

I think you just confused me more. Not sure what you did with the connector with all black wires, but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't get 12V out of them as they should be common grounds.

I've got to go get some connectors to finish up one of these today.

I've built it out of an old PSU I had. I'll use that for awhile. Seems like it should be a cleaner/more versatile solution.

My newly configured printer power supply. No more mess of wires and I've got 12, 5, and 3.3V connections.

It was a tight fit to cram all those wires in there. If I ever have to take it apart I'm going to shorten them by about half so things fit nicer. Fan still spins so It isn't too tight.

The PSU has a SINGLE 12v rail (see output label on PSU), meaning all yellow wires are connected together on the PCB of the power supply and same goes for the black wires, all are connected together on the PCB for the PSU.

By connecting 3-4 yellow wires together and 3-4 black wires together, the load will be able to draw the maximum amount of current from the PSU. My comment about the connectors was in response to your questions about the two different connectors available.

One thing to worry about is air flow, if you crammed all of the wires in the case you likely have caused the fan to not be a efficient at moving air and cooling off the components in the PSU. I would definitively take the opportunity to shorten the wires now before using it.

So when I shorten them I really only need to hook up 4 wires to each terminal?

If i understand you correctly all the 12V come from a common source, all the 5V come from a common source, and all the 3.3V come from a common source? If that is the case I'll just cut the majority of the wires short and tape them up safe and out of the way.

Exactly. You will see that all of the colored wires come for the same source, if you remove the PCB from the case you will see that all 12v, 5v, 3.3v wires all are connected to one another. I have cut off some wires because I don't need 10 of the same voltage.
