Removing Nozzle

Post by Dale Eason »

Tried to unscrew the nozzle on my stock RostockMax V2. First I backed out the PLA while it was still hot. When cool I tried a small wrench but It would not budge. Took the nozzle out of the machine and used a socket wrench but all it did was strip the corners off the nozzle hex part. So what was the right way to do it? Any ideas on how to proceed now that there is no way to use a wrench on it. I have a metal lathe, mill, and drill press so I have some tools that might help. I suppose I could drill it out just a tad smaller than the thread diameter and then try to get the brass threads out. Perhaps it is glued in by the ABS and PLA I have printed in the past.

Currently damaged the resistors in the first attempt to hold it against the wrench. I saved the thermistor. So now it is pretty much a fresh hot end with a PEEK still attached on one end and the nozzle on the other.

Maybe time to switch to the E3D V6 but I don't have a way to print the adapter :(

Did pretty much the same thing when I first tried to take off my nozzle.

Had to buy new resistors also... But when I had them in, just cranked up the heat on the hot end to 245C held the hot end with some needle nose pliers and unscrewed the nozzle with a wrench.

In terms of an E3D there are mounts you can buy for it if your desperate e.g. http://www.tricklaser.com/J-Head-Groove ... JHGMNT.htm, or you can nicely ask someone to help you out and pay them postage ;)

If only the resistors are dead, buy a 40w heater cartridge and use self fusing silicone tape to secure it all, or make a hole and hold it with a small screw.
If you are not going to print high temperature filaments why change to E3D? The seemecnc hot end is great.

To remove the nozzle first you need to heat the hot end. Don't try to unscrew it cold.

I did the same thing except I also mangled the thermistor...I was so frustrated with the design, particularly using the permatex goop.

I wound up replacing the resistors with a cartridge heater, making my own threaded thermistor assembly, using F4 tape and adding in-line connectors to all of the wiring. The result works better, looks neater, is safer and I can remove and re-install it easily.

Tincho85 thank you for the video of the upgrade. Thanks to all for the advice. I received my E3d V6 and used its heater in my stock hot end and got the nozzle removed.

The original reason I wanted to remove the nozzle was PLA had stopped extruding. After getting the nozzle off I discovered the probable cause. The PTFE tube was not inside the nozzle as it should have been and there was lots of ABS around the outside threads of the nozzle, PTFE and leading up to the PEEK. There was also a plug of PLA inside the end of the PTFE close to the nozzle. Got that all cleaned up with acetone. Will put it all back together with a new .5mm nozzle with good hex sides and use the heater from the E3D V6 as installed in the video. Save the rest of the E3D for another day.
