I have on a couple occasions found that my print stopped dead in its tracks saying it disconnected. From matter control Thinking it was just an error or glitch I just restarted and kept better eye on it and all was well. The last time I realized that it is probably the computer security bumping me out to the login screen, it's set for 5 hours, and went aha.

Obviously I'll set this to not logout in the future, but it makes me wonder if in similar circumstances it's possible to reheat the bed and tip, and just resume the print from where it left off.

In my case the thing just stopped right where it was when it disconnected and didn't even return home, and I can see that I'm at slice 266. I'm actually leaving it where it was for now to see if anyone knows how to do this. It's no big deal to just reprint, but I can imagine scenarios where a really long print fails for whatever reason and resuming would be nice.

Any thoughts?

Its not possible to easily start a failed print again. I suppose it would be done if you could cut the G-code where it failed and start it from there but I've never done that. I know that in Simplify 3D you can try to measure a print at the point where it failed and start the print at that point but its really fiddly and not worth the faffing on most prints. I've also crashed the nozzle into the print once or twice because I was a couple hundred microns out.

So in short, yes it can be done but its not really worth it in most cases.

The biggest problem is the head moves away from the print area.
If the machine would just STOP and not move. plus start cooling down the head and bed it would be much easier to resume.
In theory it should work like a cnc machine when you hit stop, you can easily resume where it left off.

In my case it just stopped dead, the LED screen said "Killed". That's probably what you would prefer. I didn't need to print anything else so I just left it there.

I dug into the Gcode and I found it was easy to find the line where it stopped, "slice266" and the code goes on from there.

If I was brave I would delete all the lines from "slice1" to "slice265" and just run the Gcode, but I don't know what "header" (for lack of the correct term) I need to include and what I shouldn't. I'm hoping someone here can tell me that and how to then run the routine manually.

What slicer are you using?
There are some programs out there (free) that you can run your gcode to simulate before you hit run.

I'm using matter slicer, and that's a great idea!
