Is this possible? I have access to one with a burned out controller board and would like to swap it out so that it can run G code but I don't have any idea where to look to get a tutorial for something like this. How much more difficult would it be than putting the Rostock Max together?

You could almost definitely use a Smoothie, but you'll need external stepper drivers ($$$-$$$$) and I don't know about spindle control, but there's undoubtedly stuff to do that. Try searching for smoothieboard CNC conversion for help. You'll probably not get a specific to your mill conversion process, so you'll have to ad lib.
Others can chime in with recommended drivers and stuff.

Thanks, any site I could be directed to? CNC Zone had a lot of "this is what I am tryin to do" threads but nothing really in depth as far as instructions were concerned.

It shouldn't be too difficult if you're DIY minded. The main problem is finding what you determine good and reliable stepper drivers, etc.

Someone else on one of the other conversion threads mentioned something about gecko drive stuff
http://www.geckodrive.com
I think those are alright. These guys also sell a lot of stuff
http://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com
Not 100% sure about quality from them but their stuff seems alright.

Bigtime!! When I first ventured into converting a mill to cnc, I began with "Stepperworld" drivers,,,, I think they were 1/4 step drivers?. I then moved up to a Xylotex board, and bought some nema 23 steppers from Dan Mauch. the Xylotex board, and support was awesome. I will not ever buy anything from Dan Mauch again. Automation Direct stepper motors are pretty good.
When I switched to Geckodrives for my steppers, you could hear the difference. The Geckodrives are musical.

And the service from PMD for their break out boards are stellar also.
