ABS Delamination...!

Hello,

I'm a new Rostock Max v2 owner and so far I've done a few small ABS prints with no troubles so I decided to start one of my larger prints. These are parts for a car mod that I'm doing. Well I got major delamination. What do you guys think might cause this, or help it rather? I was printing at 225c nozzle / 90c bed. I do not have an enclosure around my printer but other folks tell me they can print ABS "OK" without an enclosure. Ambient room temp is in the mid-70's with no breezes or anything. I sliced the part with the Cura slicer that's built in to Repetier Host, using a config file that I got here from the forums. I checked and the Cura config was about the same as the Rostock Max MatterControl config that you can download from SeeMeCNC. So I'm open to suggestions!? :D

Thanks

I suppose the first thing I'd try is raising the nozzle temp.

Enclosures help SIGNIFICANTLY when printing anything more than an inch tall.

Also, you need to crank up the nozzle temps quite a bit - depends a little on the specific material. Most ABS can be run up to 260C but if you're running a stock hot end you're limited to 240, bump it up to at least 235C, possibly 240 if you can. I run mine at 245-250C(E3D)

Ok.. I've cranked the nozzle up to 240c on the current print. It's only about an inch tall so far with no cracks yet, so maybe that will help for the rest of the print. I am running the stock hotend so I'm afraid to go any higher than 240c. The assembly manual says that 245 is the max because PEEK starts melting at 248.

We'll see how it goes. I have an idea for an enclosure if this doesn't help.

Thanks!

But I don't have a cat to hold the plastic down! :mrgreen:

Do you think this will work for a heated enclosure?

Might get a little too warm for the electronics.

something with walls like that might be better off in slic3r as well, what does the stl look like?

I got it to print correctly on the second try. I guess it just needed an enclosure. I also changed brands of filament. This time there were only a few hairline splits that you can hardly notice without really looking. I'll just drop some superglue in those.

Most all the walls are 3.5mm
Print speed was 60mms, with 80mms inner walls, and 80mms infill / support.. Travel speed 300
I'm reducing the 80's to 75 and the travel speed to 150 to try and cut down on some of the jerk.

Apparently this must be a hard thing to print in ABS. I can supply the STL if you want to take a look or give it a try. Also, for anyone looking at the print picture I'm open to suggestions for different settings or things I might do to improve my prints? Although this is a part that will be hidden once it's put into use, it's still a learning process!

Thanks,
J

I can get perfect ABS prints on walls like that by setting temp for first layer at 229 and bed 75 (helps with sticking to bed) and then all the rest of the layers at 225 and bed 70. The cooling fan is the big part, I leave auto cooling on
bed_temperature = 70
bridge_fan_speed = 70
cooling = 1
disable_fan_first_layers = 2
extrusion_multiplier = 1
fan_always_on = 0
fan_below_layer_time = 10
filament_diameter = 1.75
first_layer_bed_temperature = 75
first_layer_temperature = 229
max_fan_speed = 30
min_fan_speed = 20
min_print_speed = 10
slowdown_below_layer_time = 30
temperature = 225
perimeter_speed = 40
small_perimeter_speed = 35
infill speeds = 60
top solid infill speed = 55
support_material_speed = 60
travel_speed = 130

I know it prints slower with these speeds however my models don't 'delaminate' with these settings. They can always be fused with acetone, but when someone is paying for something I print I don't like to waste time trying to make things look good.

Thanks for the settings! Do you have an enclosure, and what brand of ABS are you using?
