I've drawn this Flywheel Fan up and think I have a pretty printable STL file. It passes the Netfabb test with no red "!".. Anyways I've started the print tonight. It pretty much fills up the print bed. If anything this should tell me how well I have my printer calibrated! I'm still pretty new to this so I wouldn't be surprised if it fails.

Would you consider this a hard print?

I'm printing this from the SD card, so I don't have a way to video it with time-lapse, but here is a screen shot of the base being laid down and beginning of the "course" support.

What material?

If you have managed to lay down a print that size without it screwing up pretty much straight away I would say your machine is nicely calibrated

What sticking agent did you use?

It may not want to release. If spray or glue, you may want to keep it in a bucket of warm water overnight.

It failed..

Not exactly sure why because it was sticking well and had already printed nearly a quarter inch tall. Looks like maybe the print shifted? BTW, this was ABS.

Sorry to hear about that fail! Can you attach the gcode?

Z lift too low...... perhaps. if the nozzle hits something it will be off for the rest of the print. looks like a section of the print, top right corner came off the build and was being dragged around by the nozzle. been there done that.

Abs is going to be a nightmare to print something that size, it looks like your nozzle bumped into an artifact/blob and threw the whole the thing out of whack. I would recommend PLA to test print this in before working up to ABS.

pla? abs? they both have their nuances...... learn one, then learn the other... anytime you swap out filament types there is a bit of a learning curve for yourself. I am fairly confident with ABS but not at all with PLA. mostly because PLA will just not work for what I am doing with it.

Don't see much to learn from trying to print it in PLA at this point. The machine is obviously assembled and calibrated well enough to lay down a sound first layer...From there it'll be a matter of dealing with ABS's quirks. Even if there's something inadequately supported in the model, ABS bridges differently than PLA does, so it might work where PLA wouldn't or vice versa.

Looks like the support material is delaminating, but it's hard to tell whether that's a cause or an effect of the tool strikes. Z-hop and temperature? Is the hot end maintaining temperature as the print proceeds?

Meaning if you want to print something this size in abs with its warping tendencies you need an enclosed heated printer. If you don't this it will either pull up from the build plate later in the print and/or crack. Hence the strong suggestion to print this in PLA which doesn't warp nearly as much and therefore much better for larger prints in non enclosed printers.
