RAMBo Control Knob not working

HI there, I have just finished putting my Rostock Max V2 together, got arduino IDE and matter control as well as the USB drivers all installed and uploaded the repetier 091 firmware to the board. Everything seems to be working fine, the temperature tests, movement tests, end stops etc. are all good.
I am just coming to set the Z height and the control knob will only click. When I try and turn it, it shows some random characters in the top left corner of the LCD screen over the top of the letters e.g. ^ symbol.
It will not scroll up and down the menu options.
The grey cables are aligned correctly (both red lines face the SD card reader on the LCD side and face to the right on the RAMBo side), I have checked their seating and check the seating of the small board that connects them to the RAMBo.
Any ideas?

And the ribbon cable closest to the sd card is plugged into the bottom connector of the RamBo?

Yes that it correct.

so it sound like it is communicating with the RAMBO, but its not doing what it is supposed to do. if I remember the serial cables are identical, switch them and see if something changes. next clear the eeprom, (write down your pid curve numbers) and reload, see if that fixes it. when in doubt reload the eeprom..................

Yep that fixed my problem with the control knob, now ill just wait to find out what other problem it has no doubt caused me
