I recently bought an E3D V6 and have it installed and ran the PID tuning. It takes awhile to get to 200C for the Autotune and then I cant get it to 235C at all it just gets stuck at 215C. After I took of the PEEK fan it got to temp no problem.

So my question is, is the peek fan necessary or is there a way to turn down the peek fan to a slower setting?

Try printing some PLA without te fan running and you'll find out pretty quickly why you need the cooling fan.
If you can't get it to temperature there is something else wrong my V5 will hit 300 easily and fault the thermistor even with the fan running at full speed. I'd check your Max PID setting , manually increase P and reduce the I and D values before running the autotune.

I guess it's possible they started running 20W heaters instead of the 40W ones they used to ship.

The heaters they're shipping by default are now 25W. They still carry the 40W heaters but the kits come with 25W.

Should be sufficient to hit 250C without issues, the original JHead ships with a single 5.8 Ohm resistor that's about a 25W heater with 12V applied, most of those will easily melt themselves.
As I said above verify Max PID, reduce I and D possibly increase P, hopefully that will be enough to get you through the PID autotune.

So there are a couple things that I had forgotten to do. One being change #EXTO_TEMPSENSOR_TYPE, it was still set to the initial 97 from the stock Rostock settings. Also the PID Drive MAX was set to 205, is that just the highest you can run the Autotune at?

After changing the Tempsensor type, I ran autotune again and my numbers were quite different. The first two times running it i got:
PID-Kp = 72ish
PID-Ki = 6.1
PID-Kd = 62.5

Then just now I got:
PID-Kp = 25.06
PID-Ki = 3.69
PID-Kd = 42.79

But now I cant even break 200C

Maybe I messed up a step on the install:
1) pulled off the old hot end
2) rewired the heater and thermo
3) installed fans
4) ran autotune
5) changed tempsensor type
6) re-ran autotune

Start by setting PID Max to 255, then reduce I and D manually then run autotune.
For what it's worth I've never gotten stable temperature from an E3D after an autotune, I've always had to tweak the PID values by hand.
To me autotune is little more than a random number generator, it's a nice idea, but seems to work well on a very narrow set of hotends.

Well I found my problem....

The mount I printed for the V6 is too short which caused the peek fan to not be seated correctly. It was blowing air directly on to the Heating Block.

Just goes to show that you should suspect hardware issues before software issues. Oh well you live and you learn! Thanks again guys for all your help.


I do have one more question, I ran the autotune on my bed and got some REALLY high numbers, what are your PID settings for the bed?

Also Im kinda in the prediciment that I need to print a new mount for the V6. Do you think I could print in ABS without a peek fan?

Probably not on a V6, you could probably get away with it on a hotend with a peek section, but you really need to have air moving over the heat sink on an all metal hotend.
