Unlevel Heated Bed or Glass

Post by addisonElliott »

Hello,
I have had my Rostock Max bed apart for a month or two now trying to upgrade the heated bed. Recently, I soldered a new thermistor and some 12 gauge wires to the heated bed and installed it back to the printer.

However, I am noticing a ~2mm gap when I place the glass on top of the heated bed. If I put the clips on, it fixes it a bit, but there are still places around the edges where its sticking up.
Here is a picture of the gap:

EDIT: After taking a drywall square to the glass and the heated bed, it is obvious that the heated bed is warped in the center. I did solder thicker wires to the heated bed, so it may have happened here.

Why did this happen and what could I do to prevent it in the future?

I believe Gene posted a solution for this, loosen the bed screws, warm the bed up to temperature, then tighten the screws.

You want to press the bed flat and keep it flat as you tighten the screws in the same pattern as spec'd in the docs. I don't think it needs to be hot in order to do this.

How difficult should it be to push it down? I have a toothbrush cup that I place in the center of the bed and then with one hand I am pushing down on it while I tighten the screws with the other hand. After tightening, I place the glass on top of the heated bed and it is still unlevel.

I even tried applying heat and using a level to see if I could get it level.

Could it be easier just to buy another heated bed and see if that is the issue?

If I was to do this operation on one of my printers, I'd put a coffee cup in the center of the Onyx and then set an old bowling ball I have on to the cup, then I'd go about tightening the screws.
