So if you haven't seen this Spool Holder design, take a look. Rick did an awesome job!

So far I've only printed the knob. This is by far the smoothest finished part I've printed. It came out great. I may reprint with a higher infill and more retract to smooth out the seam. I also need to slow the speed and lower the temperature on the top (Didn't come out perfect).

The Nylon lock nut fit perfect, just snug enough to hold it in and require some force to be pulled out. I think when I get I get it assembled, I'll glue it in.

Some of the settings I used.
Prometheus V2 Hotend 0.4mm Nozzle
2.30mm Retract 30mm/s
5.00mm Wipe
0.15mm First layer
0.10mm Layers
3 Shells
25% infill
35mm/s
100C Bed
237C Nozzle

This was also my first print on PEI, stuff is amazing!

I converted over from something I made to this last night, basically the same hardware I was already using. I've never been a fan of the cone style holders but these seem to work just fine. I think it's the double bearing in each cone that aid in the alignment. My last spool holder had a tendency to unravel as it spun a little too freely.

I must say, your print looks great. I've never printed below .2, although now I think I need to try it out.

There hasn't been a design that I dislike, but I do like the cone style over say a spool holder that sits on bearings. RMLynch's design is definitely my favorite for its way of easily integrating into the RSMv2 and the Knob. I've seen some cone designs that just hold the spool with a nut, the knob puts that final touch on it. And all those awesome renderings make it appealing as well.

Thanks about the print. This is the largest 0.10mm print that I have done. I guessing the geared stepper has something to do with it because I've never had a finish like this before. I would do all my prints this way, but 0.10mm layers do take a while to print. That knob took about 7 hours at 35mm/s.

Got the Cones and Support Arm Mount printed. I adjusted my retract to 2.5mm and the cones came out very well, seam is very smooth.

The bearings fit great in the cones. My M8 rod I bought actually slides easily in the Support Arm piece so I will need to glue it, but I may reprint because it looks like I'm under Extruding a bit.

I think we all owe Rick a lot of gratitude for developing this.
It has to be the best designed spool holder I have seen. My personal thanks to Rick.

Wow!

Thanks guys!

I just came across this thread now and I must say I'm flattered!

I've some new stuff in development but I've been held up with family, engineering, life, etc... Once finished, it'll be posted for sure. It will (should) solve the problem with the filament retraction/binding when homing. Plus I will be doing a new frontend for the GLCD and possibly an internal mount for the Smoothieboard.

Glad to see/hear that this project worked out so well for all of you.

Cheers!

Rick

Awesome! Can't wait for the GLCD/Smothie as-well. Maybe I can convince you to make something for the Kossel mini :P

@KAS,

Probably could be done.

Would be a matter of just reconfiguring the mounting holes I'm sure, or modifying the way it mounts.
