No lcd display and failed eeprom_clear

Recently finished putting together my romax v2. Made sure everything was plugged in right and hit the power switch. The fan for the powersupply and the Rambo board kick on, but the lcd stays off, like no power is going to it.

I then tried to do the eeprom_clear. My computer recognizes the device and I was able to install the driver for it, but the eeprom_clear fails everytime. It times out because it can't make a connection. I'm using the right settings and I selected the correct com port.

Here's the error I get:

avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
avrdude: stk500v2_getsync(): timeout communicating with programmer

I used a Windows 10 computer but I'll be trying a Linux computer today to see if it makes a difference.

Any ideas what it could be? I'm really worried its my Rambo board, hoping it's just my lcd though.

Thanks,
Jakx

The LCD won't display anything (maybe two white bars, I don't recall) because there's no software to display anything on it. :)

Do you see a steadily lit LED on the RAMBo board when you turn on the power?

Apologies, I meant to say literally nothing is displayed on the lcd. Meaning not even the black bars. It doesn't power on at all.

As for the led on the Rambo, I'm not sure where it is located, but I don't see anything light up when it turns on.

There's a little green LED on the RAMBo that should light when you apply power. Since the fans are going, the power supply is working. Check the wiring to power connector attached to the RAMBo and also check the F2 fuse to make sure it's not blown.

Hmm.. No led when powered on, but like you say, it's getting power because the fan kicks on. Power plug looks fine and I double checked to make sure I had the wiring correct.

How do I check the f2 fuse? I'm looking at it, but how do I tell if it's bad or not?

You take it out of the board and check it for continuity with a meter.

F2, f3, and f4 fuses all read fine.

No led when powered but flashing green light every 5 seconds or so when attempting to upload the eeprom_clear code, which fails each time. Installing Linux on a computer to try again. Tested on Windows 10 and Windows 8.1. See if it makes a difference.

Tested fuse f2 while power was on and it reads 12.45 volts and fuse f3 reads 3.41. Are those readings correct or should they both be 12 volts?

I suggest posting pics of the LCD cable connections and adapter board so we can verify they are properly installed.

The flashing light you see when attempting to upload is likely getting power over the USB cable. With no power LED on the RAMBo, there is clearly a hardware or wiring problem that needs to be solved. You might try removing the LCD cables and then trying to power up the machine. If the RAMBo power LED then works, the problem is isolated to the LCD parts.

Here are some pictures. Not the tidiest wiring job. I was going to clean it up once it was working..
Tested with the lcd unplugged, made no difference.

My wiring should be right, I went off of several online sources and followed the manual and all that, but maybe you guys see something I don't.

Also, I tried the eeprom_clear on linux and it failed as well. This was tested with the lcd disconnected.

I'm going to speculate you have a fair dose of red color-blindness.

You've used an orange wire (3.3V) from the power supply instead of a yellow wire (12V). Fix that and I bet things will work a lot better. The voltage at all of the fuses should be 12V.

If you can't tell orange and yellow apart, you may have to turn on the power supply and measure the voltages to identify and label them.

WOW! That is extremely funny.. Will test and see what happens.. I am color blind, so naturally I thought it was the right color. Unbelievable. Will post with any changes.

SOLVED!

My colorblind eyes mixed up the wires. Rambo and LCD are working properly and I have the firmware loaded and I am moving onto calibration!
Thank you guys so much for all the help and suggestions!

Not so unbelievable. About 8% of the males and 0.5% of females have some degree of color deficiency, including me. My own case is pretty mild and I can see colors well enough in bright light. But I have a neighbor who can't tell the difference between red and green LED's....which is a problem dealing with some of todays electronics.

Does he drive a car?
LED traffic lights might be a problem for him lol

She does, and usually not, as they're big and bright and the lights function is also identifiable by position and/or signage. There aren't any of those Dallas-style horizontal lights around here to confuse things. However, the light on her sink water filters that blink green for good and red for replace is a single small bicolor LED...I check it for her every few months.

They converted all the traffic lights on the main road through my hometown to horizontal a while back, I assume for clearance for oversize loads. There is a standard order for the horizontal lights too but, since they're less common, it's harder to trust them.
