RADDS

Post by JFettig »

I just picked up a RADDS board from reprap.me prior to realizing that there is a us distributor. Shipping via Fedex economy was very quick! I'm installing it on my custom delta shortly.
I bought the RADDS board, the chinese Due that they sell, as well as the RADDS LCD. I'm using DRV8825 drivers I already had from my BBB/CRAMPS setup.

It supports 6 steppers without any add-on boards and will support 8 extension board.

Its pretty simple to set up. Use the programming port to program it and to connect repetier host to - I learned that I couldn't see the eeprom when I used the other port.

Configuration is pretty simple via repetier
http://www.repetier.com/firmware/v091/index.html
http://doku.radds.org/dokumentation/fir ... /repetier/

Punch in all the relevant info and you'll be up and running pretty quick. You can probably even import the data from a rostock max and change out the controller and be up and running even sooner. There are a couple things I will have to double check on to get the proper settings for but I imagine it'll be up and running pretty quick.

I'll post my configuration.h up later once I have it all dialed in, then all someone would need to do is modify it for their printer or use the repetier configuration utility(just upload configuration.h then modify).

One thing I don't really like at the moment is it is powered up by USB so its going to always be on when I have it connected to a banana pro/raspberry pi.

Waiting for your configuration.h, and for delivery of RADDS, have ordered one.

I am going to use it with UDOO QUAD instead of banana pro/raspberry pi + Due, ordered one too.
3D printing is magic!

Sorry my engrish :-/ you could PM me in Russian.

Renha,

I haven't had a ton of time to mess with it but it is doing quite well. I have the RAPS128 drives installed too. Currently its set up for 128 micro steps but it limits me to about 100mm/s so I'll drop it down to 32 when I have time.

The configuration.h file is attached. You'll want to check tower angles, steps/mm, etc. It might be slightly customized for my printer. It is for Repetier .91, I didn't have time to figure out what the new features in .92 were and they were causing the printer not to work properly(temperature watchdog)

I considered using the UDOO Quad - it doesn't have SPI - not sure I'd use it anyway if I used the UDOO QUAD.

for those who don't know how to configure a configuration.h, go here and upload it, make your changes and download it(or the full set of files) http://www.repetier.com/firmware/v091/index.html

I have been using Repetier Server, its really nice. I can use the arduino program to compile a bin, and Repetier server will flash new firmware onto the Due from anywhere on the network. It has made configuration of the printer super easy.

I'm intrigued by this solution as well... I like the Duet board, but I also like the idea of modular step sticks...

Let us know how your adventure continues, I'll be watching!

Jim,

I also posted in my other thread about it: http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php ... =50#p83851

A few reasons I didn't go with the Duet board were the modular drivers, the massive touch screen display(I hate touch screens, even on my phone), as well as unproven firmware. I had my share with smoothieboard. I really like the ease of changing eeprom and firmware and controlling the printer from Repetier Server. I don't get why people are so afraid of the modular stepper drivers, I like not being stuck with whatever the board MFG wants you to use and have the ability to change them as desired.

I put one of the Watterot silent step sticks on my LittleRP, and it's amazing. Another guy at the MakerHive put them on the XY motors of his Prusa, and the little aquarium pump that he uses for layer cooling is louder than his stepper motors are. http://goo.gl/K55Qho

(Which I also posted in your other thread.)

Hi JFettig, How is the Radds working out? I would like to buy a new board for the CoreXY I have built and really like the idea of using Repetier as I am very familiar with it.

Thanks
Tony

It's working great! I really like it. I'm running the raps128 drives on it, the downside to those is you loose a lot of speed when running high microstepping. I might dial them back to 32 microsteps to get my speed back.
