Effector platform for quicker E3D nozzle change

Post by Shizuma »

So I've had the E3D V6 hotend on my printer for quite a while now and I ordered several nozzles for it, however I almost never change them due to the hassle involved. Of course with the E3D there's two ways to mount it, above the effector platform using longer standoffs for the fan to clear the effector platform, or below and lose a significant amount of build height, and since I often print very tall parts I went with the former.

Now the one problem with mounting above is that the hotend block is up inside the center of the effector platform meaning for a simple nozzle change I actually have to un-mount the hotend from the effector platform to change the nozzle because I can't get a wrench around the block to hold it while I loosen the nozzle so I decided to design an effector platform to fix that problem without sacrificing too much build height, this is what I've come up with so far. I've yet to print it since I need get a measurement off my printer still, but this is specifically designed for use with the Tricklaser carbon fiber arms, that's the dimension I need to measure off my printer when I get home, because instead of doing the whole nut/washer stackup thing I want to design it so the arms just screw directly to the effector platform without all the stacked hardware.

From my standpoint, it would be simpler to just get a new hot end and swap that out when you need a different nozzle size.

And with the ball and socket arms, that becomes very quick and easy. You just need an electrical disconnect, and it would be a fast job.

Well no, you don't change out the whole platform, just the hot end assembly.

That's an expensive solution for a simple nozzle change, especially if you want to have multiple nozzle sizes/types, .25 for fine detail, .4 general, .6/.8 less detailed fast printing, plus a harder material nozzle for printing abrasives, , you're talk an additional $240+ for multiple hotends instead of a few $10 nozzles, plus the time it would take to remove and install a new hotend would I'm sure be more than just heating up the hotend and swapping out a nozzle.

That's pretty much what I do.
Three screws, to connectors and I've changed hotends.
Having said that I can see how people on a budget would be less than enamored with the idea.

Money aside, it takes me about 30 seconds to swap out a hot end. Maybe. :) I get the added bonus of not burning my fingers like I did the last time I tried changing a nozzle. :)

ohhhh I like that. STL file please?

and if I can make one suggestion addition. Could you include a mount for a Mini Height Sensor board?

Besides the easier nozzle change , another benefit would be that most standard layerfan shrouds will fit to this, provided that you add the mounts for them as with the standard platform! The low clearence of the E3D has been verry annoying imho. So please add the layerfanmounts!?!? The rest looks great!

Yeah, though I was actually planning on designing a layer fan shroud specifically for it as opposed to putting a mounting hole where people currently mount layer fans. It is another reason for making this design because yeah, layer fans don't really fit with the E3D mounting above and I've actually never had a layer fan on my printer since I pretty much print exclusively in ABS, but I got some of the iron PLA from Proto pasta so I figured I should integrate a layer fan for when I print stuff with that as right now the couple times I printed with any PLA they were relatively small parts and I simply setup an 80mm computer fan off the edge of the bed pointing at the part.

I just swap out the hot end and effector plate as a single unit. Very fast and easy to do with the new style arms with ball//cups.

Did you all notice that GeneB shut up real quick and changed the subject away from the
f15 in his garage? Inquiring minds want to know more about the F15 in the garage and I say NO-WE WON'T GO!
Wait a minute, he is going to be at the MRRD in a week or so and I will be there also!!!
Hey Gene, glad you changed the subject, I don't want to know any more about the F15, have a great and blessed week! Slowly
cowering away with palm on head.........

It's only the cockpit section (Forward of bay 5 I think it was), that snapped off one during a crash. He's got a link to the project in his sig.

Yea, I know. We've briefly talked about it before, I used to put bombs and missiles on them.
