Kinda odd.

Any ideas what could be causing this one? White Inland ABS, sides are smooth enough to almost not feel the layers at the top and bottom, but in the middle where the text is, it's really rough.

It's possible that you are overextruding. Have you calibrated your EZstruder?
What slicer and what are your retract and retract speed settings. Is this the
SeeMeCNC hotend and what is the nozzle size?

Yes, Steps per mm could be off. Also the extruder could be skipping when doing retracts.
What's your print speed? travel? retraction speed and amount?
Did you measure the diameter of your filament?

Stock hotend. .5mm diameter. Measured the filament and it's averaging 1.72mm. Running MatterControl, with matterslice.
Retraction speed is 110mm/s,
retraction is 6.8mm,
speeds for infill is 40mm/s,
inside perimeters 40mm/s,
outside perimeters 35mm/s,
travel speed is 300mm/s,
first layer speed is 12mm/s.

Try a retraction of 2 and a retraction speed of 30.
And make sure that the EZstruder has been calibrated.

Okay, made the change, going to print out a pyramid to see if it helped. Pulled the bowden and flushed the filament to the end of the extruder, told it to spit out 100mm, checked with calipers, and it's 100mm, so that's good!
Also just printed out a different part, it gets all janky at the sameish layer height. Bed was the usb side of the ubertooth case, and flat side of the mount. Heh, so the top of the photo...

Calibration pyramid is done. .2mm layer height. Same settings as above, but changed the settings Eagle mentioned. Still some barnacles on it, but it didn't go all fuzzy at the layer the other prints did. I'm reprinting the mount again, it prints faster than the usb adapter case. We'll see if it freaks out again.

If you have changed your retraction to 2 with a speed of 30 and still get those artifacts, try a different slicer and try again.

Have you looked at your coast values (assuming your slicer has that ability)? These could and likely are being formed before the retract ever occurs especially since diddling the retract doesn't drastically change them.

Good idea Gary, he is using Matter Control which I don't know if it has the coast value, that's one of the reasons I wanted him to try a different slicer. It is odd how it only happens where there is text.

Nope, no coast settings in matter control, that I can find anyway. I'm going to set up octopi in a bit and see how that works.

Well octopi was almost useless for this. Still not sure why mattercontrol won't use the built in slic3r engine. Keeps placing parts outside the print area. Fired up slic3r by itself sliced the part and sent the gcode to mattercontrol, puts it right in the middle where it's supposed to go, but the print is worse than matterslice.

Going to try it in pla and see if that makes a difference.

It almost looks like your mount is loose, what with the progressive degradation of the parts. Check that, and then take a look at the G code renders in matter control (layer view, generate, then 3d and set it to the top layer) If the G code is clean, and the mechanics are good, then I wonder if you have some problem with having too high an extrusion multiplier.

Would you mind sending me the .stl and let me print at least a section of the text.

Sure, PM me your email.
Otherwise here's the part on thingiverse.

It's the Ubertooth-No-Cap-8-20-2015.

the author of this thing was not getting what i would call a clean print out of it
Perhaps there is a basic file problem?

Looking at the generated G code, it's a mess for the lettering sections. Looks fine when generated for a generic printer, but there's a slew of retracts and other crap when you generate it for a max (using matterslice in mattercontrol). Speed varies between layers as well. I suspect it's because that lettering isn't part of the main part (other than a single O), but are actually grouped to it, producine self intersections and other messiness. With the lettering removed from the model, it generates much cleaner code. I believe a pass through netfabb would improve it a lot, but unfortunately Azure is being annoying right now.

Actually nettfab likes it just fine and opening a repair session the text is really clean and has a minimal number of tessellation triangles.
I am going to give it a shot at printing. I have a vase coming off in an hour or so after a 15 hour single layer print.

I think my printer just doesn't like the overhangs. Here's another large print in progress, and it's printing great.

Printed the "thang" using HatchBox Silver ABS. Sliced with S3D, bed 100C, nozzle 220C, layer fans 65%, retract 3mm, retract speed 15mm/sec, coast 1.25mm, rapid 250mm/sec, print 80mm/sec. Initially have some "lice" on the print in the text area are but this rubbed off with a finger and a wire brush.
Text is a little funky but it appear that the sides are 90 degrees to the surface, could be helped significantly if there were a slight angle. Also would have done better with text definition using a narrower layer width (printed at 0.1mm high 0.4mm wide).

The text funkyness is probably an S3D thing, it has a tendency to remove small details like that, I assume they try and simplify the path or the model to speed up slicing.
I didn't notice it was doing it until I compared two prints with slightly indented text from S3D and KiSS.

The S3D code is there when you look at the line by line code. The problem is that the first edge of the letter is at a 90 degree overhang and is just thrown out there like a bridged layer.
